Hunter Mountain is the largest ski area in the Catskills and one of the most significant ski resorts in the northeastern United States. The surrounding hamlet of Hunter and the adjacent communities of Tannersville, Haines Falls, and Lanesville make up a ski resort community that is active across all seasons, with skiing from November through April and hiking, mountain biking, and the Hunter Mountain summer festivals drawing visitors the rest of the year.

The housing in the Hunter area is overwhelmingly oriented toward vacation and seasonal use.
