Before you buy a Level 2 charger, your panel gets a vote. Here's how to know whether you can plug in today or need an upgrade first.
A Level 2 home charger is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for an EV — you wake up to a full battery every morning. But it's also one of the largest continuous loads in your home, so the first question isn't which charger to buy. It's whether your panel can handle it.
Start with your panel's amperage
Look at the main breaker. Many older Hudson Valley homes have 100-amp service, while a Level 2 charger typically needs a 40–60 amp circuit. Whether that fits depends on what else you run at the same time — electric range, dryer, AC, water heater.

Signs you may need an upgrade
Red flags on the panel
- 100-amp service plus electric heat, range, or central AC already on the panel.
- A panel that's full — no open slots for new breakers.
- Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other obsolete panels (a safety issue regardless of EV plans).
- Frequent breaker trips or flickering lights under load.
The load calculation

When an upgrade is the right call
Sometimes an upgrade to 200-amp service makes sense, which also future-proofs the home for heat pumps and induction. Either way, the work is permitted and inspected, and we document everything for any available NYS Clean Heat and utility rebates.
