7 Ways to Lower Your Energy Bills This Winter

March 8, 2026 · 6 min read · Hot Water Solutions

Small, practical changes that add up — most of these cost little or nothing, and a few pay for themselves before spring.

Heating is the biggest line on most Hudson Valley winter utility bills. You don't need a full renovation to bring it down — here are seven things that genuinely move the needle, roughly in order of bang-for-buck.

Free changes you can make today

1. Set back the thermostat

Dropping the temperature 7–10°F for the 8 hours you're asleep or out can cut heating costs by up to 10% a year. A programmable or smart thermostat does it automatically.

2. Change the filter

A clogged filter makes your system work harder for less heat. Check it monthly during heating season and swap it when it looks gray.

3. Use the sun (and your curtains)

Open south-facing curtains during the day for free solar heat; close them at night to hold it in. Reverse ceiling fans to clockwise on low to push warm air back down.

Low-cost upgrades worth the money

4. Seal the obvious leaks

  • Weatherstrip doors and add a draft stopper.
  • Caulk around windows and where pipes or wires enter the house.
  • Add an outlet gasket to exterior-wall outlets — they leak more than you'd think.

5. Don't heat empty rooms to 72°

If you have zoning or ductless heads, set unused spaces lower. For single-zone systems, this is where a heat pump retrofit can pay off.

The one that pays for itself

6. Get a tune-up

A maintenance visit catches the efficiency-killers — low refrigerant, dirty coils, a failing igniter — before they become an emergency on the coldest night of the year. It's the cheapest insurance in home comfort.
